Many people fear the regret of choices that they make. The fact is, we do the best we can at any given time, given the information and personal insight that we have available to us. While we cannot change or past choices, we can take responsibility for them, make amends where possible, and move on in a healthy way. This includes forgiving ourselves for the mistakes we have made and the harm we have done others. It is a sign of emotional health to experience the pangs of conscience, but often we take on excessive guilt and make ourselves ill torturing ourselves for the past. Here are the first 2 of 4 steps to reducing your regrets and guilt about the past, and freeing yourself to move forward into a peaceful and joyful place:
1. Take care of yourself, not only emotionally, but physically. The body’s well being has a direct impact on your mental and emotional health, so be sure you are eating well, taking in fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. Avoid highly processed and sugar laden foods, and take vitamins and supplements where needed, beginning with a food based multivitamin and fish oil. Exercise after checking with your doctor, ideally focusing on cardiovascular exercise. These measures will not only improve your physical health and body image, but it will also send you a message that you are worth the effort to care for.
2. Accept that you are exactly where you are meant to be, right now, at this very moment. You have taken a path that leaves you in the perfect place at the perfect time. Whatever has happened, good or bad, whatever you have done – all adds up to this perfect moment in your existence. Embrace this concept and find the freedom that comes with adopting this perspective.
